This code has been updated with SuperTweet to version 2.17 and is currently available here. We’ll work on updating the instructions for the XPort version of the leaf board as well.

Note that the upcoming version of the kit will use the Wiznet Ethernet module and that different code will apply to that version (though it will also support OAUTH).

Your soil may be very conductive. If this is the case, adjust the values in the code to compensate for the extra conductivity.

Sounds like the power supply is protecting itself from an electrical short. With the board unplugged, use a multimeter to check continuity between power and ground. You should NOT have continuity between these two, if you do then there’s a short. Also check to make sure you soldered in the regulator the correct way.

Botanicalls obtains an IP address via DHCP. The XPort can also be manually configured if desired.

The only update to the current kits is the power supplies.

This note is now obsolete. New versions of the Botanicalls kit come with a switching power supply that can be used on both 110 and 220 V AC mains power.

What cable are you using. Did you load the FTDI drivers if you are using the FTDI cable?

The last time we heard about something like this is was a bad solder. Try reheating anything that looks iffy, making sure the solder flows into a nice “volcano” shape. I’ve marked some joins that look iffy to me in your picture here. Try fixing those by heating the join until the solder melts nicely, then adding a little bit more so that the flux from the new solder flows the old.

The message you’re getting indicates that the device is not getting a proper IP address. Have you set up Internet sharing on your PC?

The adapter in these kits should not be plugged in to 220 mains power. A different, 200 volt adapter should be used instead.

Eagle files, including schematic are available in the Customize section.

Yes, your plant will post either because the soil becomes dry, or when it detects that you’ve watered it, by a rapid rise in soil moisture. Note that if you water a plant that’s already completely wet, there won’t be any change in the moisture level so simply pouring more water on won’t encourage it to tweet for you. :-)

    Thanks, Cal.

This is UBER helpful and we’ll update the instructions with this info. We’re working now to simplify the process much further – but this is great!

We actually worked out a solar power arrangement as a project for Jeff Feddersen’s Sustainable Energy course when we were in graduate school. The documentation for Solar Botanicalls is on my blog. As for WiFi, it’s been considered of course but the hurdle is building in an interface for configuring the SSID and security information needed to join the network. It would also probably double the price of the kit, which wasn’t something we wanted to do on the first round. But yes, we’re still interested and discussing possible solutions.

You can change the email address, but the username and password MUST be the original ones unless you customize them by changing the code on the board.
