Using the default code, you might miss some status updates. The system is set to ignore its startup state so if it is turned on out of the container it doesn’t immediately send an alert. That behavior can be changed in the code by you. We encourage you to tinker!

Yes, the multi-voltage supplies are more expensive but we’re still looking into them for future versions. I don’t think people would be very happy to get kits without power supplies so it’s unlikely we’d go that route.

The code is compatible with Arduino 0011. We haven’t tested it with 0013 yet.

The proper setting is Arduino NG with ATmega168.

    Hi Philip,

    Thanks for your note.

Botanicalls is open source, please credit/link to Botanicalls if you are iterating on the project. We’d also appreciate if you could post here so that the community can share in what you learn.

To discuss this further, feel free to email us at mail@botanicalls.com.

    Thanks,

    Botanicalls

UPDATE: The problem ended up being traced to one poor solder connection on one microcontroller pin. Re-heating that connection made the solder flow and bond with both the pin and the pad properly. Twittering commenced immediately.

Remember, you can’t see electricity so use a multimeter and check for connectivity if there’s any doubt!

Check which board you have selected. On the Tools menu under Boards you should choose “Arduino NG or older w/ATmega168”

Good, the password and username needs to be the same. 12 flashes means it timed out when it tried to connect to Twitter. Sometimes that happens when it’s down.

Let’s look into your account setup, outside the public forums of course. Can you contact us directly? mail(at)botanicalls(dot)com

Did you change the username and password on Twitter, or is it still set to the original one you got with the kit?

    Hi Butterscotch,

If it’s 12 blinks then it’s either an unknown error, or failure to connect. Most likely it’s the latter which means you got a local IP address, but it didn’t make a connection to the Twitter server.

Let me know if that helps!

Your pictures don’t show a microcontroller installed, just the socket. Can you post another shot with the microcontroller plugged into the board? Also, a close-up of the LEDs might be helpful in figuring out if they are installed correctly.

    Hi Zakary,

Can you send us a picture of the finished circuit board, or post one to Flickr?

We’re big ZigBee fans. The “classic” original version of Botanicalls used a network of 802.15.4 radios, the underlying layer of ZigBee. So while I don’t have a date, it’s certainly something on our minds.
